SHINY OBJECT SYNDROME – THE TRUTH OF THE MATTER
So what is Shiny Object Syndrome? Shiny Object Syndrome is when you allow something new to take you off course in your business building pursuits. It’s the urge to start a new more exciting project before your current project is complete.
It’s the urge to begin promoting a new company when you aren’t successful in your current company.
This manifestation of the shiny object syndrome is actually what has prompted me to write this particular article.
Right now there is a big upcoming launch of an app based company that I am being hit with invites to check out on a daily and sometimes even hourly basis.
Now this article is not meant to disparage the opportunity in any way because quite frankly there are some very smart marketers behind the company and I am sure it will grow to become quite successful.
What this article is meant to do is point out the fallacy in the thought process that most marketers are experiencing as they engage in their promotion of this company.
Why This App Can Kill Your Chances Of Succeeding In Home Based Business
I hear marketers speaking about this app like it’s the next coming of Christ in that it is the end all be all of e-commerce, social networking, network marketing, online marketing, and every other type of marketing that they could possibly think of which I truthfully think is pretty humorous.
They are buying into the “FEAR OF LOSS” marketing that is being put down by master marketers who know how to push the psychological buttons of the masses to stimulate them into taking action on their offer.
The whole “GET IN NOW BEFORE YOUR DOWNLINE DOES” screams of a lack based mentality and only serves to attract those who are at a low point in their career by making it seem that they will lose out on something if they don’t take action… RIGHT NOW.
The thing about this is that there are principles involved with creating a successful online marketing business that are independent of any opportunity or offering within the marketplace
and until the individual marketer decides that he or she will master these principles they will continue to be sheep being herded from one opportunity to the next being fleeced of their money and even more importantly their time and credibility.
You see the fact of the matter is that it isn’t this app that is the issue here, it is the individual marketer’s addiction to shiny object syndrome that will cause them to lose any ground that they have gained with their potential business partners.
The plain truth of the matter is that if you are promoting company ABC and next week you are promoting company XYZ without having a pretty damn good reason for the switch you have just shown your prospects that you are not a serious business builder.
Yeah, yeah…. I hear it all the time…. “What about multiple income streams?”
Doesn’t that have a place in your business model? We are internet marketers and that’s what we have been taught as the right thing to do.
Well, let me tell you something… and I am going to be a little bit harsh about this….
because I want this to SINK IN>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

If you aren’t making money in your business, if your business is taking more money out of your pocket than it is putting in… then you have an INTERNET MARKETING HOBBY.

I was just like a lot of marketers out there who are affected by Shiny Object Syndrome and would get started promoting ABC company and work really hard at it for about 3-6 months and then the results didn’t immediately manifest themselves I would hop on to the next “Flavor Of The Month” marketing technique, or worse yet another company entirely.
This type of behavior places you on the home business hamster wheel constantly chasing the carrot of success that never materializes because you don’t even realize that you are in the clutches of shiny object syndrome.
How Do You Cure Yourself From Shiny Object Syndrome?
Shiny Object Syndrome plays into the way society is being shaped taught to think by the media. Quick sound bites have become the norm rather than the exception.
People want fast food type of success and when they don’t get it they are off chasing their tail yet again in a new company or implementing yet another soon to fail “can’t miss” marketing strategy.
If you are ready to evolve to the next level in your marketing career and actually cure yourself of Shiny Object Syndrome here are crucial action steps for you to follow:
1. Admit that you have a problem. Just like any other addiction this disease can be beaten but only if you admit to yourself that it exists.
2. Become clear on why you have chosen your current company. There was a reason you engaged in the first place right? Was it the people you are working with? Was it the products? Was it the income potential?
Whatever the reasons were that drew you to your current company take an unbiased view of them and actually write them down as a physical reminder so that the next time you are tempted to go chasing your tail down the rabbit’s hole you have something to anchor you.
3. Develop a plan of action for the year. Top marketers know exactly what their year is going to look like. They know what they will be earning by the end of the year from January 1st to December 31st.
Why? Because they have taken the time to write down a plan of action broken down in steps to make sure they are constantly moving forward.
What I do on a personal basis is break down my year into quarters. This allows me 90 day cycles from one goal to the next. So if my annual goal for 2013 is to be earning $60,000 per month my year breaks down like this:
April: $10,000 per month
July: $30,000 per month
October: $45,000 per month
December: $60,000 per month
- I then break each section of those month’s down and understand the number of new enrollments at the basic level that is necessary to achieve these numbers.
- Once I know the number of enrollments needed I then break it down further to understand the number of leads generated necessary to achieve those enrollment numbers.
- Once I know this then I break down the action steps necessary to achieve the necessary lead numbers.
- Then all I have to do is make sure that I am taking the necessary action steps that will produce the number of leads necessary to hit my daily numbers which in turn allow me to hit my weekly goals which feed into my monthly, quarterly, and annual income expectations.
Shiny Object Syndrome.. Cured!
So just to wrap this up with some of the philosophy behind this post let me stress to you that when you go hopping after the flavor of the month you are just destroying your credibility with the potential business partners you have been courting.
Is there a place for multiple income streams in your business model? Yes, but that discussion will have to wait for another day but the simple fact of the matter is that if you aren’t already earning a MINIMUM of $30,000 per month this shouldn’t even be in your thought process.
Do yourself a favor and run the numbers for your company and the income goals you want to hit this year. If those numbers make sense then that is all you need to know.
Don’t look at any of the new company launches that are happening on a weekly basis. Why would you even tempt yourself?
There is an acronym that I have found to be incredibly empowering when it comes to defeating Shiny Object Syndrome:
When you focus your intent, desire, and action taking on a singular goal the universe itself will bend to your will.
